Emotionally Focused Individual Counselling
A deeper way of understanding yourself, your emotions, and your relationships
Sometimes you know that something in your life isn't working, but you're not sure how to change it. You may feel overwhelmed, disconnected, stuck in familiar patterns, or find yourself reacting in ways you don't fully understand.
Emotionally Focused Individual Counselling offers a space to slow down, understand what is happening beneath the surface, and develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your emotional world.
As an emotionally focused counsellor, I work with individuals to explore the emotions, experiences, and relationship patterns that may be influencing how you see yourself, respond to others, and navigate life's challenges.
What is Emotionally Focused Individual Counselling?
Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, sometimes called EFIT, is an attachment-informed approach to individual counselling. It focuses on helping you understand your emotions and the patterns that develop around them, rather than simply trying to make difficult feelings go away.
Our emotions often have an important story to tell. They can be connected to our experiences, relationships, fears, needs, and ways of protecting ourselves.
In counselling, we can gently explore these patterns together so you can begin to respond to yourself and others with greater awareness, flexibility, and compassion while exploring emotional difficulties, relationship patterns, trauma, anxiety, and other concerns.
How can Emotionally Focused Individual Counselling help?
You may benefit from emotionally focused individual counselling if you:
Feel stuck in patterns you can't seem to change
Struggle with anxiety, stress, or emotional overwhelm
Find it difficult to understand or express your emotions
Are hard on yourself or struggle with self-criticism
Experience recurring difficulties in your relationships
Feel disconnected from yourself or others
Are navigating the effects of trauma or painful past experiences
Feel overwhelmed by life transitions or major changes
Want to understand why you respond to certain situations the way you do
Want to develop greater self-compassion and emotional awareness
Want to create healthier and more fulfilling relationships
You don't need to have everything figured out before beginning counselling. You can simply start with what's happening in your life right now.
What happens in Emotionally Focused Individual Counselling?
Our work begins with understanding what brings you to counselling and what you would like to be different in your life.
Together, we may explore:
Your emotional patterns
What happens inside you when you feel hurt, overwhelmed, rejected, angry, anxious, or disconnected?
Your relationship patterns
How do you respond when you feel close to someone, and what happens when you feel threatened, misunderstood, or disconnected?
The experiences underneath your reactions
Sometimes our strongest reactions are connected to deeper emotions, needs, or experiences that aren't immediately obvious.
Your ways of coping and protecting yourself
We can explore the strategies you've developed to manage difficult emotions and relationships, and consider whether they are still serving you.
New ways of responding
With greater awareness and understanding, you can begin developing more flexible and compassionate ways of responding to yourself and the people around you.
The process is collaborative and paced with care. You don't have to force yourself to talk about anything before you are ready.
Is Emotionally Focused Individual Counselling right for me?
You may find this approach helpful if you're looking for more than strategies for managing symptoms and want to understand yourself at a deeper level.
Emotionally focused counselling can be particularly helpful when you notice that you keep experiencing the same emotional or relationship patterns even though you understand intellectually that you want something different.
Therapy can provide a space to pause, become curious about these patterns, and explore what may be underneath them.

Taking the first step
Reaching out for counselling can feel vulnerable, especially if you're used to handling things on your own.
You don't need to know exactly what you need from therapy before you reach out. We can begin by talking about what's bringing you to counselling and whether an emotionally focused approach feels like the right fit for you.
